The health of a nation's people is determined, to a large extent, by their ability to control effectively microbial populations. The procedures may be very specific, such as providing medication to eliminate an infect micro-organisms from the body, or they may be more general, such as the sanitary practices in the home or hospital. Everyday practices such as water purification, milk pasteurisation, and food preservation accomplish control of microbial populations. The principal reasons for accomplishing the control of micro-organisms can be summarised as follows:
- To prevent transmission of diseases and infections,
- To prevent contamination or growth by undesirable micro-organisms,
- To prevent deterioration and spoilage of materials by micro-organisms.
Micro-organism can be removed, inhibited, or killed** by physical agents, physical processes, or chemical agents. A variety of techniques and agents are available, they act in different ways, and each has it's own limits of practical application.
