~ Hard Surface CLEANING with Ultrasonics~
There are three main areas where ultrasonic cleaning of hard surface components in aqueous solutions has advantages over other systems.
1 - By using wetting agents, such as industrial detergents specially formulated to take advantage of the cavitation effects, dosages are reduced and thus economy in consumables is achieved. By comparison with solvent based systems, modern detergent based solutions are cheaper, and the dilution rate often less than 3%, meaning that the cost of these solutions is usually considerable cheaper. Disposal of detergent solutions is often to drain thus avoiding high solvent disposal costs.
2 - Previous labour intensive, hand scrubbing systems cannot achieve the grain penetration of ultrasonic systems as each vacuum bubble is less than one hundredth the diameter of a bristle. There are in the region of one million bubbles per cm3 of solution. Each bubbles implodes with a pressure of three thousand tonnes per cm3 and a temperature is momentarily generated of about 1000 degC. An advantage of this ultrasonic scrubbing is that there is no damage to the work surface under process.

Ultrasonic cleaning of ferrous surfaces will remove every last vestige of oil and grease, unprotected surfaces will rapidly oxidise, (rust). A final rinse in a weak solution of Phospheric acid will give upto seven days protection. Items for subsequent plating can be taken to the platers after this treatment, no further degreasing is necessary, only the normal acid pre-plating stage is required.

Practical Application. Static baths and/or automated dunking systems using ultrasonics share a common goal. This is to obtain the maximum cleanliness, at the highest speed, at the lowest cost. Coupled with today's requirements for compliance with Health & Safety Regulations and environmental protection, ultrasonic cleaning is increasingly being recognised as a vital link in modern manufacturing processes.
